Workshop Course

1. Important Notes (Read First)

This workshop is for learning and review. It is not an official certification course. In an emergency, always get help from an adult and/or call emergency services.

What this workshop does

  • Teaches decision-making and safety awareness
  • Introduces CPR Level C and AED concepts
  • Helps you recognize emergencies and know what to do first

What this workshop does not do

  • Does not replace hands-on training with a certified provider
  • Does not give permission to perform medical procedures

2. Scene Safety

Your safety comes first. If the scene is unsafe, stay back and call for help.

Common dangers to look for

  • 🔥 Fire or smoke
  • 🚗 Traffic
  • 🔍 Broken glass or sharp metal
  • 🩸 Blood or bodily fluids (use barriers if available)
  • 🐕 Aggressive animals

Rule: If you would be put in danger, do not enter. Call 911 or get an adult.

3. Calling 911 (What to Say)

Tell the dispatcher

  • What happened (brief and clear)
  • Where you are (address / landmark)
  • Who is hurt (how many people)
  • What you see (breathing? bleeding?)

Tip: Stay calm and follow instructions.

4. Life-Threatening Injuries (Recognize Emergencies)

These are situations where you should treat it as an emergency and get help immediately.

Examples

  • Severe bleeding that won’t stop
  • Breathing problems (very hard to breathe, blue lips, gasping)
  • Unconsciousness (not responsive)

First priorities

  • Call 911 / get an adult
  • Keep the person as safe and still as possible
  • Monitor breathing until help arrives

5. Bleeding (Basic Control Concepts)

  • Use a barrier if available (gloves/cloth)
  • Apply firm pressure with a clean cloth or dressing
  • Call 911 for severe bleeding

Always get an adult for serious injuries.

6. Burns

  • Cool the burn with cool (not cold) running water
  • Do not pop blisters
  • Get help for large or severe burns

7. Nosebleeds

  1. Sit up and lean forward
  2. Pinch the soft part of the nose
  3. Wait 10–15 minutes
  4. If it won’t stop, get medical help

8. Choking (Recognition + Getting Help)

Signs of serious choking

  • Cannot breathe or speak
  • Turns blue or collapses

What to do

  • If they can cough: encourage coughing and watch closely
  • If they can’t breathe: call 911 immediately and get an adult

9. CPR Level C (Concept Overview)

CPR Level C covers adult, child, and infant CPR concepts.

When to start CPR (concept)

  • Person is not responsive and not breathing normally
  • Call 911 and get an AED if available

Key ideas

  • Minimize interruptions and follow dispatcher/AED prompts
  • Switch helpers if you’re tired (team CPR)

Hands-on CPR skills should be learned with a certified instructor.

10. AED (Awareness)

An AED can guide you with voice prompts. Use it in suspected cardiac arrest (unresponsive, not breathing normally).

Safety reminders

  • Make sure everyone is clear when the AED analyzes/shocks
  • Follow voice prompts step-by-step

Exact pad placement and device steps depend on the AED — the device instructions are the priority.

11. Wrap-Up

  • Safety first
  • Call for help early
  • Focus on life-threatening problems first
